The Christmas holidays are a time of joy, family, and often, indulgence. With the New Year upon us, it's the perfect moment to embrace Ayurvedic principles for a holistic recovery to regain balance and vitality. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, teaches us that health is a state of balance between the body, mind, and environment. Here's how you can realign with nature's rhythms after the festive season.


Understanding Your Dosha

Firstly, identify your dosha or Ayurvedic body type – Vata, Pitta, or Kapha. This will guide you on your journey to recovery. Vata types are typically energetic but can become easily stressed. Pitta individuals are intense and driven, prone to irritability when out of balance. Kapha types are calm and steady but can suffer from sluggishness if they overindulge.


Post-Holiday Detox

Morning Ritual

Begin each day with a glass of warm water and lemon to kickstart your digestive system. Follow this with a short meditation session to clear your mind and set intentions for the day.


Breakfast: Spiced Porridge

A warm, spiced porridge is perfect for balancing all doshas in the morning.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups almond milk
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • Fresh fruit for topping

Instructions:

Combine oats and almond milk in a saucepan.  Bring to a simmer, add spices, and cook until creamy. Sweeten with honey or maple syrup. Serve with fresh fruit.


Lunch: Ayurvedic Kitchari

Kitchari is a nourishing blend of rice and mung dal that detoxifies while replenishing your system.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup basmati rice
  • 1 cup mung dal (split yellow)
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp ghee or coconut oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped vegetables (carrots, zucchini, spinach)

Instructions:

Rinse rice and mung dal until water runs clear. Heat ghee in a pot; add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and turmeric. Once seeds pop, add rice, mung dal, vegetables, water, and salt. Bring to a boil then simmer until cooked into a porridge-like consistency.


Evening: Herbal Tea

Wind down your day with a cup of herbal tea such as chamomile or ginger-lemon tea to promote relaxation and digestion.


Daily Practices for Balance

Exercise: Engage in gentle activities such as yoga or walking to stimulate digestion and relieve stress.

Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep to restore your body's natural rhythm.

Self-massage: Use warm sesame oil for a calming self-massage (Abhyanga) to nourish the skin and promote circulation.
